CB SKATE PARK

CB Skatepark – A Legacy in Motion
Skateboarding has been part of the bloodline of Carolina Beach since at least the late 1970s, when a concrete park on Hamlet Avenue offered locals a fun early glimpse into the world of pay to skate parks. The scene evolved through the years—from the days of Big Boy’s Water Toys to the legendary Ramp House from 89-93', which eventually became part of the iconic Skate Barn in Hampstead, NC.
When those early parks closed, the spirit of the sport didn’t fade. Instead, it fueled the community’s desire for a dedicated space to ride. Ted Lashley, then Director of Parks and Recreation, became a driving force behind the creation of what would become the original
CB Skatepark, with Artisan Skateparks creative and progressive construction a new era for the island’s skating scene was built in 2007.
Fast forward to 2022: a new chapter in CB skateparks evolution. That year saw the formation of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Friends of Carolina Beach Parks and Greenways (FoCB)—and with it, the launch of an ambitious plan to expand and evolve the skatepark into a full-fledged destination. The vision was to double the park’s size and incorporate exciting new features, including a pump track, mini bowl, street course, and a performance stage for local bands.
FoCB proposed a partnership with the Town of Carolina Beach, asking for a funding match once the group raised 50% of the goal. The town agreed—and the grind was on.
A dedicated Skatepark Subcommittee began organizing a series of Sk8 Festival fundraisers, which ran from early 2022 through 2024. These high-energy events brought together skaters, artists, musicians, and food vendors to raise money and celebrate the spirit of the CB skate scene. As the buzz grew, major donors and sponsors jumped in—including Ben Wingrove (Schedule Pop), the Surfrider Foundation, Bigger’s Market, and Flaming Amy’s memorial for Nolan —pushing the campaign across the finish line.
In January 2024, Artisan Skateparks returned to break ground on the expansion. By May 2024, the new park was complete—and the dream had become reality. Later that year, FoCB partnered with Ocean Cure to raise funds for a wheelchair-accessible viewing deck, helping to make the space inclusive for all riders and spectators. The park is now home to Life Rolls On adaptive skate events, alongside community contests, concerts, and more.
But the story isn’t over. Plans are already in motion for landscaping, lighting, shade structures, and hangout spaces, ensuring that the CB Skatepark continues to grow with the community.
